The Overberg90 min from Cape TownOff-grid
“A swim in the river before breakfast and not a single notification all week.”Megan & Tom, HeronDiscover
On the banks of a quiet mountain river, deep in an Overberg kloof, two A-frame cabins sit low in the fynbos — powered by the sun, fed by a mountain spring, and a short walk from water you’ll have almost entirely to yourself.
Where you’ll stay
Identical in heart, different in outlook. Each sleeps four in two bedrooms, looks out through a glass gable over the fynbos and sits privately on its own path to the river.

Timber, glass and a deck that faces the valley. Built gently with the endangered Overberg Sandstone Fynbos in mind, so the landscape stays the main event.
Inside
Light timber, soft linen and a palette borrowed from the hillside. Amenities and décor are chosen for their environmental ethics as much as their looks — supporting local NGOs, design, art and craft.

Off-grid, on purpose
The cabins run completely off the grid. It’s a quieter, slower kind of comfort — and the reason guests sleep better here than anywhere else.
Lights, fridge-freezer and plugs to charge phones and laptops, all from the sun. Gas heats the water and the oven.
Drawn from a spring on the farm and tinted amber by the rocks and fynbos, like the river itself. Filtered rain water is provided too.
A wood-burning stove for wild winter nights, with a complimentary bundle of seasoned firewood.
No cell signal and no Wi-Fi. Just birdsong, the river, and a night sky thick with stars.

The river
Rare, private access to a pristine mountain river. In summer, when the water drops, the pools are safe for swimming — here, mornings start with a dip and end on the deck with the mountain turning pink.
Fynbos calendar
The Overberg sits in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the richest plant kingdom on earth. What’s blooming changes with every season — and so does the reason to come back.
Summer is the dry season — long daylight hours languishing in the river, on quiet beaches or up in the mountains. The ericas are still out on the slopes.

Calmer weather, warm water still in the pools and the trails mostly to yourself. Late autumn brings the first of the proteas.

May, June and July are the best months for proteas. Winter is cold, wild, windy and wet — weather made for the fireplace and long lunches.

Spring is pincushion season, and the ericas begin a show that runs all the way into summer. The valley is at its most colourful.

The Overberg
Fynbos mountains, whale coast and one of the world’s great coastal roads. Hike, ride, swim — or simply sit still.

Farm trails lead up the kloof, along the river and onto the ridge. Hiking maps are in every cabin.

Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay and the Hermanus coast — surf, swim or stroll.

Visit the colony at Stony Point Nature Reserve, a short drive along the coast.

Whale-watching from the cliffs, plus wine estates, restaurants and Fernkloof Nature Reserve.

One of the most scenic coastal drives in the world, between False Bay’s mountains and the sea.
Guestbook
We could happily live in Heron forever. Waking up to the valley through that glass gable, a swim in the river before breakfast and not a single notification all week — we didn’t want to leave.
Thank you for sharing your valley with us. An unforgettable week.
The stars alone were worth the drive. We’ll be back in pincushion season.

Your hosts
“A clear river and a hillside of fynbos brought us to this kloof, along with our love of wild places. We took over the old farm in 2021 to restore it — clearing aliens, rewilding the riverbank and returning as much space as possible to nature.
Kloofwater lets us share this landscape with you, and every stay contributes to the long-term care and conservation of the land.”
